Activity idea : a barrel-making workshop
The workshop consists first of all of thinking and discussing as a team before moving on to the practical part of actually assembling the barrel. There is a video to offer guidance for certain stages. Each team is given a pack containing: staves, all of which are identified to help put them all together to make the barrel; 2 metal hoops; a hammer and a wooden wedge to help fit the staves together. The difficult part is synchronising the work, as the staves have to be held upright against each other and the metal hoop has to be held at the same time to act as a guide for making the barrel. There is a technique, because, in theory, a barrel is made by a single person, whereas there are 3 or 4 of us for this exercise. The winning team is the one whose barrel can be stood up or rolled without the staves falling out within a time of around 45 minutes. A well-deserved wine-tasting is then organised on the wine-maker’s premises. |
